How to Verify a Peptide COA: 6 Checks

A vendor founder went to prison for forging lab certificates. Six checks that separate a real Certificate of Analysis from a PDF that proves nothing.

How to verify a peptide certificate of analysis

In July 2026 a federal judge sentenced the founder of a US peptide vendor to 70 months in prison. Among the admissions: he had been forging laboratory certificates to give his products credibility. When the government tested six compounds sold as testosterone-mimicking research chemicals, all six contained actual testosterone.

That case is the reason this page exists. Nearly every peptide vendor now publishes a Certificate of Analysis, and the existence of one has stopped meaning very much on its own. What still means something is whether the certificate can be tied to the vial in your hand, and whether anyone independent stands behind it.

Here are six checks, in order of how much they tell you.

1. Does the batch number on the vial match the certificate?

This is the check that does the most work, and it takes about thirty seconds.

A Certificate of Analysis documents one specific batch. If the lot number printed on the vial label does not appear on the certificate, the document describes material that is not what was shipped. It may be an older batch, a different product, or nothing at all.

This failure is not hypothetical. In 2026 a reviewer of one vendor reported publicly that the batch numbers on the vials received did not correspond with the certificates supplied. Whether that was an administrative error or something worse, the buyer had no way to tell — which is precisely the problem.

What good looks like: the vial carries a lot number, the certificate carries the same lot number, and ideally a QR code on the vial resolves to that specific batch rather than to a generic product page.

2. Is the testing laboratory named?

A certificate should say who performed the analysis. A named third-party lab — Janoshik, Colmaric, Vanguard, Kovera and Chromate are common in this market — can in principle be contacted to confirm a result on file.

A certificate with no laboratory name, no address, and no contact details cannot be verified by anyone. It is a design template with numbers in it.

Ask yourself: if I wanted to confirm this result independently, is there anybody to call?

3. Is there a test date, and is it close to your batch?

A certificate is a snapshot. A test date lets you see whether the analysis was performed on current material or reused from a batch produced a year earlier.

Undated certificates, or certificates dated well before the product's manufacture, tell you nothing about what shipped.

4. Does it state the method, not just a number?

"99% purity" is a claim. "99.4% by RP-HPLC" is a measurement.

Two methods do most of the work in peptide testing, and they answer different questions:

  • HPLC (high-performance liquid chromatography) measures purity — what proportion of the sample is the target compound versus everything else.
  • Mass spectrometry confirms identity — whether the molecule is the one on the label, by molecular weight.

A certificate showing purity but never confirming identity leaves open the possibility that a very pure sample is very purely the wrong thing. The Paradigm case is the extreme version of that: products sold as one thing that contained another.

Look for a chromatogram. The actual trace, with peaks and a baseline, is much harder to fabricate convincingly than a summary figure typed into a table.

5. What else was tested?

Purity and identity are the minimum. A deeper panel may also cover:

  • Sterility and bacterial endotoxin — relevant for anything reconstituted for injection
  • Heavy metals
  • Net content — confirming the vial actually contains the labeled milligrams
  • Water content and residual solvents

More panels are better, but breadth does not substitute for traceability. A seven-point panel on a certificate you cannot tie to your vial is still a certificate you cannot tie to your vial.

6. Who is publishing it, and can you get to it without asking?

Vendors that publish per-batch certificates openly — linked from the product page, or via a QR code on the vial — have made a structural commitment that is hard to walk back quietly. Vendors that supply a certificate only on request, or supply the same PDF for every batch, have not.

The uncomfortable summary

A Certificate of Analysis is evidence, not proof. It documents what a laboratory reported about a batch of material at a point in time, assuming the laboratory exists, performed the work, and the document was not altered afterwards.

Those assumptions held for most vendors most of the time. In one documented case they did not, and the consequence was a federal prison sentence. The checks above exist because the difference between a certificate that means something and one that means nothing is usually visible in under a minute — a batch number, a lab name, a date, and a method.
